Baby Tooth Care Tips

Baby teeth may be small, but they’re important. To help prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria that can lead to decay, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock recommends regularly cleaning your newborn’s gums with a damp washcloth following feedings. It’s important to start cleaning your child’s teeth before they come in to jumpstart a healthy smile.

Wipe the gums off after each feeding with a warm, wet washcloth or a dampened piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. In addition, take measures to prevent baby bottle tooth decay, a disease that causes severe, swift decay of baby teeth. To help prevent it, do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of formula or a sugary drink, such as juice. The possibility of tooth decay is directly related to the number of times that sugar comes in contact with the teeth. Your child’s baby teeth act as placeholders for adult teeth. Without a healthy set of baby teeth, your child risks having trouble chewing and speaking clearly as they get older.

Toothbrush Care

Brushing your teeth plays an important everyday role for personal oral hygiene and effective plaque removal. You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush; however appropriate toothbrush care and maintenance are important considerations for oral hygiene. At Bensalem Dentistry we want you to know how and when to replace, clean, and store your toothbrush.

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush approximately every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. However, toothbrushes will wear out more rapidly depending on factors unique to each patient. It is also important to never share a toothbrush because this practice could be a concern for people with compromised immune systems or existing infectious diseases. If your toothbrush comes in contact with another, thoroughly rinse the brush with warm tap water to remove any remaining toothbrush and debris. When you are done using the toothbrush, store it in an upright position and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

If you have further questions regarding toothbrush care, give us a call. To learn more about the services we offer, visit www.bensalemdentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call 215-638-9952.

Diabetes and Teeth

People with poorly controlled diabetes are more prone to dental problems. They are more likely to develop infections of their gums and the bones that hold the teeth in place, because diabetes can reduce the blood supply to the gums. If you have diabetes, please call our office to schedule a professional exam with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock to prevent further dental complications.

If you have diabetes, symptoms of dental problems include bleeding and sore gums, frequent infections, and bad breath. Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, managing your blood sugar level is critical. The higher your blood sugar level, the higher your risk of tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis. In addition, high blood sugar may cause dry mouth and make gum disease worse. The decrease in saliva can cause an increase in tooth-decaying bacteria and plaque buildup. You can prevent these problems by maintaining good blood sugar control, brushing and flossing and least twice a day, having a dental checkup every six months and especially by informing your dentist that you have diabetes.

How to Avoid Tooth Decay and Cavities

At Bensalem Dentistry we want you to have the healthiest mouth achievably possible. This includes avoiding cavities at all cost. When you eat or drink foods containing sugars; the bacteria in the plaque produce acids that attack tooth enamel. The stickiness of the plaque keeps these acids in contact with your teeth and over time the enamel can break down, causing cavities to form.

Tooth decay – also called cavities or dental caries – can happen to anyone but are a particularly common problem for children and young adults. Left untreated, dental cavities can become infected and eventually, tooth decay can result it tooth loss. The best way to prevent dental problems associated with tooth decay is to practice good oral hygiene. Eat Cheese to Keep Your Teeth

Cheese lovers rejoice, because a study completed by the Academy of General Dentistry has proven that the delicious dairy product does wonders for teeth. Although we love to see you here at Bensalem Dentistry, we want you to protect your teeth against cavities to avoid fillings. Therefore, if you want to prevent against tooth decay, introduce a little more cheddar into your lifestyle.

Cheese helps reduce cavities forming in teeth because it neutralizes plaque acid. A pH level lower than 5.5 puts a person at risk of tooth erosion, which is a process that wears away tooth enamel therefore, the higher the pH level on the surface of teeth, the more they are protected against dental erosion, which causes cavities and leads to fillings. Researchers have found that the fermented dairy product produces more alkaline (pH) which in turn, boosts pH levels reducing the need for dental treatment. It also creates a protective film around the teeth which further protects them against the acids that attack enamel.

Pregnancy and Oral Health

Taking care of your mouth while you are pregnant is important for you and your baby. Changes to your body when you are pregnant can make your gums sore or puffy, causing them to bleed. At Bensalem Dentistry, we want you to know that receiving oral health care, practicing good oral hygiene, eating healthy foods, and practicing other healthy behaviors will help keep you and your baby healthy.

You should continue to see your dentist during pregnancy for oral examinations and professional cleanings to avoid issues such as pregnancy gingivitis. Usually, gum inflammation appears between the second and eighth month of pregnancy. Signs of pregnancy gingivitis range from redder-looking gums that bleed a little when brushing teeth, to severe swelling and bleeding of gum tissue.

Diet and Oral Health

Everyone loves a little indulgence every now and then, but what you eat and how often you eat are important factors in maintaining good oral health. Bacteria in the mouth convert sugars and carbohydrates from the foods you eat into acids, and it’s the acids that begin to attack the enamel on teeth, starting the decay process. At Bensalem Dentistry we can’t monitor what you eat, but we can offer advice that promotes optimal oral health.

To keep your teeth and gums in tip-top shape, choose healthy foods from the five main food groups: fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy. The foods you eat and the beverages you drink can have a direct influence on the incidence and progression of tooth decay, depending upon:

  • The form of food – whether it’s liquid, solid, sticky or slow to dissolve

  • How often you eat sugary/acidic foods and beverages

  • The nutritional makeup of the food

  • The combinations of the foods you eat and the order in which you eat them

  • Medical conditions you may have, such as acid reflux and eating disorders, which can increase risk of cavities and weakens teeth.

What’s Inside Your Mouth?

Your mouth is made up of more than just teeth, so good oral health goes way beyond simply brushing and flossing. The oral cavity consists of several components in addition to the teeth, including gingiva (gums), tongue, palate, cheeks, lips and floor of the mouth. Whether we are taking preventative care, restoring oral health, or making cosmetic improvements to your smile, Bensalem Dentistry offers a wide variety of services to keep these components looking and feeling their best.

The next time you’re brushing your teeth, spend a minute looking at the parts of the mouth that lie farther inside the oral cavity. Knowing what these structures do and what they look like can help you to maintain optimal oral health. When you open your mouth and look in the mirror, everything that isn’t a tooth is covered by a protective lining called the oral mucosa. The oral mucosa plays an essential role in maintaining your oral health, as well as your overall health, by defending your body from germs and other irritants that enter your mouth.

Also covered by oral mucosa, gums play a critical role in your oral health. Healthy gums are firm, cover the entire tooth root, and do not bleed when brushed, poked, or prodded. Whether you are eight-years-old or eighty-years-old it is important to practice good oral hygiene to keep all of your oral cavity components healthy by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing.

To learn more about services we offer that protect the inside of your mouth, visit www.bensalemdentistry.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call 215-638-9952.

How to Get Stronger Teeth and Gums

Healthy teeth and gums not only give you an esthetically pleasing smile, but also indicate that good oral health and hygiene play a very important role in your life. In addition to brushing and flossing, a healthful diet (with natural or added fluoride) protects teeth from decay and keeps the gums healthy. At Bensalem Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock wants patients to know that a healthy diet, good oral hygiene and professional cleanings will not only help protect you against oral disease, but it can also help you to keep your teeth for a lifetime.

In addition to brushing and flossing as well as routine dental cleanings, proper nutrition is critical for developing teeth and gums to ensure that they are resistant to tooth decay. Good nutrition remains important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums in adults. Avoiding sugary sweets is also important. Fluoride, which is easily absorbed into tooth enamel, also strengthens your teeth making them more resistant to decay-causing acids. Fluoride may also repair early-stage tooth decay by promoting remineralization of tooth enamel.

Loose Teeth in Adults

For children, loose teeth are a part of the aging process and they often look forward to their tooth loss with eager anticipation. However, loose teeth in adults can be indication that some of the bone or ligaments have been damaged due to periodontal (gum) disease. At Bensalem Dentistry, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock can successfully treat his patients, even in advanced stages, with deep cleanings and good periodontal maintenance protocols.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common causes for loose and shifting teeth. It all starts when the bacterial plaque that forms on your teeth around the gum line hardens into tartar because of inadequate brushing and flossing. This leads to infection that gets into an area between the teeth and gums, called the sulcus. The infection then breaks down supporting tissues and creates a pocket that gets deeper as the disease progresses. This damages the attachment of the teeth to the gums and they become loose.

The good news is that you can avoid this disease, and you don't have to let it get to the point of developing periodontal pocketing and loose teeth. How to Properly Brush Teeth

Brushing your teeth should be part of your daily routine; and if it is, it’s probably not something you put too much thought into. But maybe you should! Here at Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA, we want to remind our patients of the proper way to brush for a healthy mouth!

Brushing does not have to be a vigorous activity. In fact, it shouldn’t be. All that is needed is a light touch with the brush to remove plaque. Hard and forceful brushing should lead to wearing down enamel. When enamel disappears, this actually makes the teeth prone to cavities.

Brushing teeth should be done in circular motions to make sure you brush the whole tooth. Side-by-side brushing could irritate gums and often misses the gum line where plaque builds up.

Brushing should be done two or three times per day. A helpful tip for squeezing a third time in your day is storing a toothbrush and toothpaste in your desk at work or locker at school.

Brushing often is important; however there is a wrong time to brush. You should wait thirty minutes after eating to brush teeth due to the acids some food leaves on teeth. Brushing too soon could allow those acids to wear down teeth.

Make sure to brush all surfaces of the teeth and include your tongue, gums, and cheeks. For more information on keeping good oral hygiene, contact Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA by calling (215) 638-9952 or by visiting our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

White Fillings in Bensalem, PA

When a cavity needs to be filled, sometimes we worry that the filling will create an unsightly blemish in our smile. In the past, this may have been true. But here at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we provide white fillings for our patients who are in need of a filling but are worried about the aesthetic looks of one.

White fillings use a composite resin that is colored to match the shade of your tooth. When applied, it blends right in with the rest of your tooth, so there are noticeable silver marks. The silver amalgam fillings of the past can even be replaced by white fillings to improve the look of old dental work.

White fillings are placed just like any other type of fillings. A dental drill is used to remove the decayed tissue. Any leftover debris is then cleaned out so the filling can be placed. The composite resin will harden, and then it is polished to shine like the rest of your tooth.

Taking care of a filling requires no more special care than a normal tooth. It is recommended to brush twice daily and floss once daily. It is also important to see your dentist for regular checkups.

White fillings restore your teeth without compromising your smile. To learn more, contact Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952 or by visiting our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

How to Avoid Staining Teeth

Keeping our teeth white is a top priority on many of our cosmetic to-do lists. In addition to our professional teeth whitening system, at Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA, we also want to offer advice to our patients for keeping teeth white!

At Bensalem Dentistry, we have a professional teeth whitening system that is great for kick-starting whiter teeth. But there are tips for keeping teeth white after a whitening procedure, or even for whitening before a procedure!

Rinsing the mouth after consuming dark liquids and foods will help avoid debris from staining teeth. Avoiding dark foods and liquids is best, but that is not always possible. Using a straw to drink dark liquids can help. Also, make sure to brush and floss your teeth three times per day to remove plaque that can trap stain causing debris close to the enamel.

When choosing toothpaste, make sure to choose one that is not too abrasive. In addition, do not bear down on the teeth too harshly when brushing. Using abrasive toothpaste and brushing techniques will actually wear down enamel, allowing darker colored dentin to show through. This also makes teeth prone to cavities.

Keeping teeth white and bright is not as hard as it seems with some minor changes throughout your day. To learn about our professional whitening system or to schedule an appointment in our Bensalem, PA office, call Bensalem Dentistry at (215) 638-9952 or visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

Post-Extraction Care

Caring for and monitoring your mouth after an extraction facilitates a safe and healthy healing. Here at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we take post-extraction very seriously. We want our patients to be aware of how to properly take care of the extraction site for a smooth and quick recovery.

Depending on the complexity of the extraction, there may or may not be stitches at the extraction site. Either way, it is important to minimize bleeding. This will help the area heal faster. There are several things that should be avoided in order to slow down bleeding. Do not drink through a straw or lie flat as both of these activities could promote the un-clotting of blood. Also be careful when brushing around the extraction site; avoid the site altogether until it is healed.

Make sure to drink plenty of water and avoid smoking or using tobacco otherwise. Tobacco can slow down the healing process and promote an infection. Soft foods will also be needed for the day after the extraction. After that, solid foods may be added as it is comfortable.

For pain relief, a saltwater rinse may help, as well as taking painkillers as directed by your doctor. Take any antibiotics prescribed as directed to prevent infection.

Taking care of the extraction site is vital for a smooth healing process. For more information about post-extraction or post-op care, contact Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA by calling us at (215) 638-9952 or visiting our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

The Effects of a Poor Dental Hygiene Routine

Ever wonder what happens when you do not brush and floss regularly? Brushing and flossing removes plaque from your teeth and prevents the buildup of it and the formation of tartar. Bensalem Dentistry here in Bensalem, PA wants our patients to know the effects of not having a good oral hygiene routine.

The purpose of brushing and flossing is to remove the plaque that builds up. Plaque is a film of bacteria that forms from food, drinks, and saliva. If plaque is not removed, it can form crystals which turn the plaque into tartar. Tartar is a hard deposit that can only be removed by a dentist. Plaque and tartar cause teeth to weaken and irritate gums. Weakened teeth form cavities and will decay teeth. When plaque and tartar irritate the gums, the gums begin to form deep pockets and recede. The receded gums now expose tooth root and cause more pain and sensitivity. The pockets also allow bacteria to reach further down into the gums where it is harder to reach. At this point, if the gum disease is not cleared up, it can cause teeth to fall out.

Plaque forms just hours after brushing and flossing. This is why it is important to brush two to three times per day and floss once daily. In addition to a good oral hygiene routine, regular visits to your dentist for an exam and cleaning are important. To schedule an appointment at our Bensalem, PA dentistry, call us at (215) 638-9952. Why It is So Important To Replace a Missing Tooth

When a permanent tooth falls out or is extracted, some of the issues may seem obvious. It could be unappealing to the eye or it could create difficulties eating. There are problems that go beyond the obvious matters, though. Here at Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to know why it is so important to replace a missing tooth.

When a tooth is missing, the chewing problems that arise will create an unbalanced jaw. This can cause pain and structural problems in the jaw. When the tooth is not replaced soon, the bone tissue in that area will begin to deteriorate. This complicates future replacement of the tooth. Also, when the jaw bone in that area becomes smaller, the other teeth will start to shift toward that open space. This creates spaces within the other teeth and hard-to-reach areas where bacteria may build up. When multiple teeth are missing in an area and are not replaced, this deterioration will cause the jaw to change shape, which in turn changes the shape of the facial structure.

Here at our Bensalem, PA dentistry, we have several options for tooth replacement. We can offer dental implants, dental bridges, and dentures. Dentures are available in full and partial forms and are available to be placed immediately or conventionally.

If you have lost a tooth, consider a consultation for replacement sooner rather than later. To schedule a consultation or to learn more, contact Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952 or by visiting our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

Which is Better, an Electric Toothbrush or a Manual Toothbrush?

There has been much debate about whether or not using an electric toothbrush has benefits over a manual toothbrush. At Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, our patients want to know which is better. This is why we are going to talk about the benefits of an electric toothbrush and whether or not they have any advantages over a manual toothbrush.

In recent studies, it has been shown that manual toothbrushes do just a good of a job brushing teeth as electric ones. For users who purchase the more expensive sonic toothbrushes, there have been less cases of gingivitis; however, this could be due to the fact that those who spend more on their healthcare are usually better at keeping a good healthcare routine. For the most part, manual and electric toothbrushes do the same job brushing. This may change for those who have trouble using their hands. Those with say, arthritis, may benefit from using an electric toothbrush since they do almost all of the work; you just need to hold them at the correct angle.

Electric toothbrushes do have other benefits, like most of them have timers to make sure you are getting a full two minutes of brushing. Others sing or play music which is good for getting the kids to want to brush their teeth.

Overall, the electric toothbrush may work well for some, but it really depends on the brusher. Manual toothbrushes have been shown to clean your teeth just as well. To schedule your examination and cleaning, call Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952. For more information, visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

Why Flossing Daily Is So Important

When going through your daily oral hygiene routine, do you make it a point to floss? Flossing should be done every day. Here at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we want our patients to know the benefits of flossing and why it is so important. We also want to make sure our patients are getting the most out of their flossing!

Flossing is vital to the health of your teeth and gums. Flossing removes the plaque that can build up between teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Plaque can turn into tartar, which can only be removed by a dentist. If left alone, plaque and tartar can cause decay and gum disease. Flossing also makes sure your teeth stay whiter and brighter.

To begin flossing, take about eighteen inches of floss. Wrap most of it around one of your middle fingers and wrap the rest around your other middle finger. Leave about an inch to work with. Slide the floss in between two teeth; curve the floss around a tooth, rubbing it up and down. Do the same with the other side of the space. Rotate the floss as you go. Hit every space in the mouth. Any type of floss works great. Flavored floss may make it more appealing.

Flossing every day and brushing twice daily will ensure a healthy oral hygiene routine. To schedule your regular dental cleaning, call Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952. For more information, visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

Options for Braces

When it comes to orthodontics, it is nice to have options. With the advanced technology these days, braces are faster, more comfortable, and even less noticeable. For our patients who are interested in straightening their teeth, we here at Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA offer traditional and clear braces.

Traditional braces these days are made from metal alloys derived from the space program. These metals create the strongest braces there has even been and allow for faster movement of teeth. They are also the smallest braces have even been, which makes them more comfortable.

Clear braces are also an option here at Bensalem Dentistry. The brackets are made of translucent ceramic, so they blend in with your teeth. These are great for patients who do not want braces to be as noticeable. The ceramic brackets are also stain resistant, so with good care, they will not discolor during your treatment.

Both types of braces work by attaching brackets to the front of the teeth and placing a wire in them. The wire applies continuous pressure on the teeth, which gradually moves them into place. You will visit about once per month to make sure the process is going as planned, and the wires will be changed out periodically.

If you are dreaming of a straightened smile, come in for a consultation to see if you are a candidate for braces. To schedule, call Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA at (215) 638-9952.  For more information, visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

Rotary Endodontics for More Accurate and Efficient Root Canals

With the technological advances in dental equipment, many dental procedures have become more accurate and efficient. One of these advances, called rotary endodontics, has improved the process of a root canal, making the procedure better for the patient and the dentist. It is for this reason that we of Bensalem Dentistry, in Bensalem, PA choose to utilize rotary endodontics in our dental practice.

In the past, performing a root canal included using a manual file. Rotary endodontics uses an electric drill that has a much more flexible file, made of titanium alloy. The flexibility allows the dentist to go further into the root without stretching or damaging the canal. This means a more comfortable experience for the patient during and after the procedure. Rotary endodontics is also much quieter than the manual files of the past, so those who get anxious about hearing the drilling will be able to relax more. Rotary endodontics also makes the process of a root canal quicker, a clear benefit for both the patient and the dentist.

Our patients’ comfort and health is of utmost importance to us. This is why we choose to update our practice as technology advances. With rotary endodontics, we can perform faster, more accurate and more comfortable root canals.

To learn more about the technology we use here at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, call us at (215) 638-9952 or visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

Inlays and Onlays

When a tooth has damage done that cannot hold a filling, but does not need a full crown, inlays and onlays are applied. They are sometimes referred to as partial crowns and they restore and strengthen your tooth. Bensalem Dentistry of Bensalem, PA offers inlays and onlays to improve our patients’ smiles and restore their oral health.

Inlays are used to restore the chewing area of a tooth, within the cusps. The cusps are the rounded edges of the tooth’s chewing surface. An inlay can be created from gold, porcelain, or tooth-colored composite resin. Porcelain and the tooth-colored composite resin blend in with the rest of your tooth for a natural look.

Onlays are used to restore teeth that have a little more damage. They restore the chewing surface of the tooth and include one or more cusps, or the entire surface. They are also made of gold, porcelain, or tooth-colored composite resin.

The process of applying an inlay or an onlay starts with removing the decayed or weakened part of the tooth. An impression is taken of the tooth and sent to a dental laboratory where the custom inlay or onlay is created. When ready, it will be cemented into place. With good care, including brushing, flossing, and regular visits to your dentist, an inlay or onlay can last up to thirty years.

If you have pain or sensitivity to a tooth, schedule an appointment at Bensalem Dentistry in our Bensalem, PA location for an examination. To schedule, call us at (215) 638-9952 or visit our website, www.bensalemdentistry.com

ZOOM! Whitening

Keeping your teeth white can be a lot harder than you might think. Even with diligent brushing, flossing and dental cleanings, teeth can still lose their gleam and darken over time due to constant exposure to food and drinks. If you’ve noticed your teeth are yellowing or dull, we offer ZOOM! whitening services to help you restore your teeth’s color and luster. It is one of the many cosmetic procedures Dr. Michael Eisenbrock offers to help patients achieve the smiles they will love to show off.

To help patients get their whitest smiles, he employs the ZOOM! whitening system, which is chair-side whitening procedure that is done in Bensalem Dentistry, using a safe whitening gel combined with low-intensity light. The light activates the hydrogen peroxide in the gel, which can lighten your teeth up to 10 shades in only an hour! Unlike other whitening systems that involve multiple sessions and take-home trays, ZOOM! produces results that are both drastic and quick.

For the best results, patients should have their teeth cleaned prior to the whitening procedures since tartar and plaque can prevent the whitening gel from working in certain areas. By having your teeth cleaned, you are ensuing that you get an even, white smile.

New technology has even made dental X-rays safer and more convenient, and many dentists have adopted digital radiography to view their patients’ teeth.  At our office, we have many state-of-the-art technologies, including digital X-rays, to provide our patients in Bensalem, PA with the best dental care available.

Digital X-rays are taken in a similar manner to traditional X-rays that use film, but rather than placing film in the patient’s mouth, a digital sensor is used. This sensor is connected to an imaging program on a computer that projects the image, allowing Dr. Michael Eisenbrock to view your teeth more closely and with better accuracy than traditional dental X-rays. Better images mean that there is a greater chance that the dentist will spot potential problems and be able to fix them before they become more serious or possibly more painful. In addition to better accuracy, digital radiography produces 90 percent less radiation than regular film X-rays, granting peace of mind to those who take X-rays frequently.

Whichever treatment you’re receiving at our practice, from a regular check-up to dental implants, we will strive to provide you with the best service with the most up-to-date technology.

The Importance of Regular Checkups

You actively take the time to brush and floss every day. You stay away from sugar, don’t smoke and make sure to eat healthy foods. Your teeth and gums don’t hurt and you don’t notice any problems with your mouth.  So, why should you brother to visit checkup twice a year or even once a year?

Even you have stellar oral hygiene habits and you haven’t noticed any problems with your teeth or gums, there are very good reasons to schedule regular dental checkups, including:

  • Professional dental exams are mean to identify problems that can be easily missed, ignored or haven’t yet become serious but could. These include minor issues like cavities and plaque. Even serious issues like periodontal disease, infection, and early signs of oral cancer can go unnoticed without professional care.

  • Regular exams and in-office dental cleanings address hardened plaque and tartar that can’t be removed through regular brushing and flossing. Professional cleanings also assess areas of the mouth that are tough to access on your own, even with the most cutting-edge household oral hygiene products.

  • Regular exams are just one part of your individual practices that keep your smile healthy—just as being a responsible car owner requires the occasional trip to the mechanic.  A professional dental exam is also one part of keeping your smile looking great! Your biannual checkup is the perfect time to ask questions and address your concerns about daily care and any smile improvements you’ve been considering.

If you’re due for a checkup, go ahead and contact us at Bensalem Dentistry for a consultation.  We look forward to seeing you at our new, state-of-the-art facility in Bensalem, PA.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are used to protect and strengthen teeth that have become extremely weak, decayed or fractured. Covering your affected tooth and restoring it to its original shape and size, dental crowns (sometimes called caps) can help reduce pain, save your tooth from needing to be extracted and keep your smile beautiful and functional. At our office in Bensalem, PA, we can see if a crown is necessary to save your smile.

Over time, as your teeth begin to weaken, they become more susceptible to problems, including decay, cracks and discoloration. Crowns are usually only necessary if decay has reached the point where the tooth structure is compromised and a filling isn’t enough to stop decay. When a crown is installed, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock will remove the decay from your tooth and use core build-up to insulate the nerve and create a surface for the crown to bond to. An impression is then made of this surface so that crown can be custom fitted. Usually made of porcelain, gold or porcelain fused to metal, the crown is fabricated in a lab and then cemented onto the current tooth. This fabrication process can take between two to three weeks.

Crowns are made incredibly strong to protect the remaining tooth structure, while the custom fit ensures that the seam between tooth and crown is miniscule, which helps protect the tooth from further decay.

If you’re experiencing pain in one of your teeth, stop by our office to see if a crown can save your smile. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Michael Eisenbrock at Bensalem Dentistry by calling 215-638-9952. For more information about our practice, visit www.bensalemdentistry.com.

Intraoral Camera

At Bensalem Dentistry, we use the most advanced technology to help as make an accurate diagnosis. That’s why we offer patients the intraoral camera. Not all dental problems can be detected through a visual exam alone. The intraoral camera is a small device, which is used in order to view areas of the mouth, which may not be visible through an exam or x-ray.

Since the camera is small, it is comfortable for patients. The intraoral camera is placed inside the patient’s mouth and can zoom in on areas of concern. Problems areas, such as cavities or decay, can be magnified, which allows dental issues to be identified sooner than through an exam.

The intraoral camera technology also allows us to transmit the images onto a monitor for you to view. This gives you the opportunity to see for yourself dental problems. Because you will see the dental issues firsthand, you will be able to take an active role in your treatment plan with a thorough understanding of the problem.

In addition to the intraoral camera, we also offer advanced technology, such as digital x-rays and sedation dentistry. Dr. Eisenbrock and his staff are experienced in various areas of dental care including cosmetic, restorative and periodontics. For more information on the intraoral camera or any of our services, please call Bensalem Dentistry at 215-638-9952.

Periodontal Health

Caring for your teeth is an essential part of maintaining good oral health, but your gums also play an important role in your health, and proper care is crucial. Gum disease can be a serious detriment to your oral health and overall wellness, and at our office, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock provides the type of regular periodontal care and checkups you need to maintain peak health and prevent gum disease.

With periodontal disease responsible for 75 percent of all adult tooth loss cases in the United States, it is critical to check for and treat periodontal issues when they first arise. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that starts when a build-up of plaque on your teeth hardens surrounding gums. In its early stages, this gum disease is gingivitis, but if it is left untreated, it becomes periodontis. Periodontis can destroy your gum tissue and lead to tooth loss. Periodontis can even result in a loss of bone mass in your jawbone, and heart disease, diabetes and stroke have also been linked to poor periodontal health.

The state of your gums affects the health of your entire body, so come to Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA to receive periodontal cleanings and treatment. It is easier to prevent gum disease or treat it early on than to reverse the effects of periodontis. Call 215-638-9952 to schedule an appointment or visit www.bensalemdentistry.com for more information.

TMD and TMJ

TMJ is an abbreviation for temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects your mandible (lower jaw) to your skull at the temporal bone. While many call disorders associated with this joint, TMJ, those disorders are more appropriately called TMD (temporomandibular disorder), and TMD can have symptoms that range from teeth grinding and headaches to trouble chewing and pain when opening and closing your mouth. TMD is not only an annoying disorder; it is also a destructive one and can cause serious damage to your teeth if left untreated. At our office in Bensalem, PA, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock can determine if you suffer from TMD and offer ways to treat the disorder.

The TMJ controls an assortment of jaw functions, including chewing, so if you’re chewing muscles or the joint itself is in pain, it is possible that you have TMD. TMD is often caused by stress, which leads to unconscious clenching and teeth grinding while awake and asleep. TMD’s symptoms include pain, trouble chewing, lock jaw, headaches or ear pain and a popping or clicking sound when opening your mouth. However, these symptoms may be indicative of other health problems as well, so it is important to see a medical professional for a diagnosis.

Grinding your teeth is an especially worrisome TMD-associated behavior since it can lead to further problems with your mouth. If your teeth grinding is left unaddressed, you will cause serious wear to the enamel of your teeth and expose the dentin, which will make your teeth more sensitive to heat and cold and more susceptible to decay. However, you can work with Dr. Eisenbrock to relieve symptoms with mouth guards or night guards.

If you think that you might be suffering from TMD or teeth grinding, schedule an appointment Bensalem Dentistry by calling 215-638-9952. For more information, visit www.bensalemdentistry.com.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Some of us are fortunate enough to be born without wisdom teeth, or to have them grow in perfectly straight.  However, most people are not so lucky.  Wisdom teeth can become impacted, or cause crowding and smile gaps.  This is why we offer precise, comfortable wisdom tooth extractions at our practice.

Wisdom teeth can cause a number of dental problems if they are not addressed and removed, if necessary.  Impacted teeth can affect the gum, jaw bone and surrounding teeth.   Patients may experience pain, tooth sensitivity and even develop cysts.

We encourage patients to visit our practice for x-rays, even if you aren’t experiencing any dental pain.  With a careful record of your wisdom tooth growth, we can determine if an extraction will be necessary.  Wisdom tooth extraction is precise thanks to the advanced dental tools and technologies used at our practice.  Any post-op discomfort is manageable with over-the-counter medications.  We invite you to visit us at Bensalem Dentistry to learn more about wisdom tooth extractions.

Stained Teeth

Here at Bensalem Dentistry,  our patients experience a variety of dental imperfections, including lack of luster of their teeth. Stained teeth are an unfortunate result of smoking, drinking certain beverages, and eating foods with high amounts of sugar — in addition to the natural aging process.

Our dentist, Dr. Michael Eisenbrock, provides teeth whitening procedures right here in our office that help patients whiten their teeth. While the tray whitening system we offer can whiten our patient’s teeth up to eight shades, we still believe preventative measures are an important way to keep a smile bright.

Dr. Eisenbrock recommends avoiding the following things that can stain or discolor the teeth:

  • Red wine

  • Black coffee

  • Tea

  • Smoking cigarettes

  • Dark-colored sodas

  • Berries

  • Soy sauce

  • Sugar and sweets

Our dental office provides the take home whitening system, which utilizes custom-made trays from impressions of the patient’s teeth and whitening gel to whiten their teeth in the office and at home. Our take-home trays are reusable, so our patients can use them again and again should the brightness of their smile fade.

If you have stained teeth and want to whiten them, contact us here at Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA by calling (215) 638-9952 or visiting www.bensalemdentistry.com

Root Canal

When patients are informed that they need a root canal procedure, they often become very fearful and do not want to undergo the procedure. The misconception that root canals are painful, cause illness or will cause further damage to their teeth is decades old and holds no truth. Science has come a long way since the first root canal procedure occurred in the 1700’s. At Bensalem Dentistry, we offer pain-free root canal procedures designed to improve your oral health.

The whole point of a root canal procedure is to alleviate pain, not cause more. Root canals are performed by removing the pulp of the tooth that has become inflamed, infected or dead. The pulp is a soft substance that is in the center of the tooth, it consists of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. The most common causes of pulp damage are cracked tooth, deep cavity and an injury to a tooth. Dr. Eisenbrock uses this procedure to save a tooth that is badly decayed and would otherwise be extracted.

One of the main misconceptions regarding root canals focuses on the idea that the procedure “kills” the tooth rather than repairing it. Once the pulp is cleaned and disinfected, the area filled and sealed with a rubber-like material called “gutta-percha.” Afterwards, the tooth is restored with a crown or filling for protection. After restoration, the tooth continues to function like any other tooth. People also think that a root canal procedure is an invasive procedure that takes hours to complete. Modern root canal procedures are often compared to having a routine filling and can be completed in just one visit.

If you have any questions about this procedure, feel free to ask Dr. Eisenbrock during your consultation.

Dental Implants

If you’re missing teeth or are in need of an extraction due to disease decay or injury, dental implants provide an attractive and long-lasting solution for filling the gaps in your smile. While there is other options for replacing missing teeth, bridges require alteration to adjacent teeth and dentures are not permanent. Dental implants, on the other hand, can not only last you a lifetime but also look and feel natural. At Bensalem Dentistry, we can use dental implants to help you achieve a complete smile that you can be proud of.

The implant process can take between three to six months to complete, and the first step in the process is to implant a titanium screw, which will serve as the replacement tooth root, in your jaw bone through an incision in your gums. The gums are then sutured, and the jaw bone is left to heal around the implant. This process is called osseointegration, and while it takes place, you may receive a temporary crown for easier speaking and eating.

Once the jaw has healed, an abutment will be placed on top of the implant to serve as the foundation on which your permanent crown will be fixed. The tooth restoration is then custom made for your mouth and is either fixed or cemented in place so that you may enjoy a complete smile that looks and feels natural.

Bad Breath

The topic of bad breath can be tough to confront, whether it’s yours or someone else’s. And, whether or not you know you have it, it’s always a good idea to take steps against bad breath—as they are often one in the same with good dental hygiene.

Most bad breath can be traced to a source in the oral cavity, whether it’s trapped food particles or potent beverage residue, bacterial and plaque buildup, unclean dental prosthetics, gum disease, or even cavities. Many of our patients here at Garrison Family Dentistry regularly ask us what they can do to prevent bad breath.  Besides completing all necessary dental work and consistently undergoing regular exams, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce bad breath on your own.
  • Drink plenty of water: Drinking water helps flush away food and beverage residue. It also keeps your teeth and gums hydrated, which inhibits bacteria growth.
  • Reduce intake of coffee and alcohol: Both substances can contribute to suborn breath and dehydration.
  • Abstain from all tobacco products: Cigarettes, pipes and chewing tobacco all contribute to fouls breath and other periodontal issues that feed into the problem.
  • Brush, floss and use alcohol-free mouthwash every day: Good oral hygiene controls bacteria and prevents a number of dental problems. Your at-home hygiene efforts are extremely important in keeping your smile beautiful and fresh.

Dental Bridges

We offer several restorative dental services here at Bensalem Dentistry.  When patients visit us to restore a tooth in full, but they are not candidates for dental implants, we provide them with reliable, affordable dental bridges.  Each bridge is custom crafted from high quality dental porcelain, ensuring that your new prosthetic blends in naturally with the rest of your smile.  The result is a beautiful smile and restored oral health.

As the name suggests, bridges are used to bridge the gap left behind by a missing tooth.  This is accomplished by modifying the surrounding teeth to support the new prosthetic.  Each supporting tooth is fitted with a crown and the bridge is bonded in between.  As a result, our patients are left with a beautiful smile that looks and feels just like the real thing.

If you are not a candidate for dental implants and are interested in dental bridges, call us today at 215-638-9952 or visit our website,www.bensalemdentistry.com for more information.

Full/Partial Dentures

Dentures
If you have missing teeth, you know how it can impact your life. Missing teeth can change the way you chew and interfere with your speech. Having missing teeth can also make you feel self-conscious about smiling. Dentures are one option for replacing missing teeth.

At Bensalem Dentistry, we are happy to offer you options when it comes to dentures. We offer conventional and immediate full dentures, as well as partial dentures.
  • Conventional Dentures: Depending on your situation, conventional dentures may be a great option to restore your smile and the function of your teeth. After your remaining teeth are extracted, the gums are given time to heal. When an allotted healing time has passed, your dentures will be placed.
  • Immediate Dentures: In some cases, you may not need to wait for your dentures to be placed after extraction. Immediately after your teeth are extracted, your dentures are placed while your gums heal. Our dentists will determine if you are a good candidate for this type of denture.
  • Partial Dentures: If you still have some natural teeth, which don’t require extraction, you may be a good candidate for partial dentures.
Our experienced and caring team at Bensalem Dentistry offer a variety of dental care, such as cosmetic services including veneers, teeth whitening and bonding. Dr. Michael Eisenbrock's procedures also include bone grafting, crowns, bridges, braces and periodontal care. We believe in providing our patients with individualized treatment plans and outstanding customer service.

Bonding

Discolored, chipped and cracked teeth, can make you feel self-conscious when you smile. At Bensalem Dentistry in Bensalem, PA, we have years of experience improving smiles with procedures, such as bonding.

The process of bonding involves using a composite resin, which Dr. Eisenbrock applies to the tooth or teeth. The first step in the process includes making the surface of the tooth a little rougher. Next, a liquid is applied to the tooth, which allows the resin to adhere to the surface of the tooth. The resin is applied and molded into the proper shape. The resin is hardened with the help of a laser applied to the tooth. The last step involves polishing the tooth in order to create a natural appearance.

Bonding is a great option to improve the appearance of your teeth for several reasons. It is one of the least expensive cosmetic procedures. It can also often be completed in one visit. Often more than one tooth can be bonded at the same dental visit. Another advantage of bonding is the procedure often does not require any anesthesia.

We combine the most advanced technology with old fashioned values. We believe our patients are our greatest asset. Dr. Michael Eisenbrock and the rest of our team take pride in providing exceptional dental care for your entire family. For more information on bonding or any other cosmetic service, please call us at Bensalem Dentistry, (215) 638-9952.
